Office workers can suffer job-related injuries too

On Behalf of | Apr 22, 2016 | Workers' Compensation |

When it comes to workers’ compensation, construction workers might seem like the most likely to need such benefits. However, it is important to remember that you do not have to be a construction worker in order to recover workers’ compensation. Any injury that is suffered on the job or as a result of job-related duties could qualify you for workers’ compensation benefits, even if you work in a seemingly safe office environment.

As far as occupational hazards, many might think that office workers have it good. But no job is without its risks, and even sitting at a desk in an office all day could result in significant injuries. If an employee is not allowed ample time to stretch or rest, the constant sitting could take a toll on his or her back and neck; the constant typing or clicking could result in carpal tunnel syndrome.

If you work long hours at a desk, you should make sure that you are sitting in an ergonomic chair and using a keyboard and mouse with an ergonomic design in order to reduce the strain on your muscles, tendons and bones. If your equipment is not comfortable, let your employer know and document the complaint. If your employer fails to procure acceptable equipment and you develop back, neck or hand issues, you could have evidence to prove that your injuries were a direct result of equipment that strained your body.

It is not always necessary to have detailed information or documents regarding a work-related injury, but it is never a bad idea. Oftentimes, workers’ compensation benefits are easy to take advantage of, but sometimes the insurance company will attempt to avoid a payout if it believes that your injuries were not work-related.
