New York is home to some of the tallest and most opulent buildings in the world. Whether workers are building, repairing or cleaning them, there is a chance that they could fall or suffer from other workplace accidents. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration puts guidelines in place to prevent this from happening, but when employers neglect to enforce best practices, workers suffer the consequences.
NBC News reports that in 2017, 887 workers died from fall-related accidents. Deaths resulting from falls also made up 17% of fatalities at work. In the construction industry, however, it made up 40% of job-related deaths. In this profession, workers may fall from scaffolding, ladders, roofs and other high places.
One of OSHA’s proposed remedies was to start a public awareness campaign. While almost one million workers benefited from this training in 2018, smaller companies may miss out on this. What is worse is that in 60% of falls in construction, it was these smaller companies that employed the workers.
According to the Associated Builders and Contractors, Inc., there is a way to make construction sites 680% safer, while also reducing recordable incidents by 85%. These are the figures reported after companies improved safety by enrolling in ABC’s STEP Safety Management System. The organization not only provides resources to construction companies, but also awards safety ratings based on a company’s commitment to various levels of strict safety measures.
Some of the tools they teach companies to rely on include new hire safety orientation, substance abuse programs and safety program goal setting. All of these converge with other factors to help companies educate their workers and improve overall safety by reducing accidents on the job.
