All workers in New York are at risk for some type of workplace injury or illness over the course of their lifetimes, but some industries and jobs pose a higher risk than others. Being aware of what causes the most injuries can help employers and employees take steps to prevent harm. However, if an employee does get hurt there is a good chance he or she is covered by workers’ compensation insurance and can file a claim to cover related costs.
According to the Insurance Journal, some of the factors involved with workplace injuries include:
- Falls to lower level or on same level
- Roadway incidents
- Getting struck by or against equipment or object
- Slip with no fall
- Getting caught in equipment
- Overuse trauma
Many of these causes can result in the employee not being able to work for longer than a week, and some of them can even result in part-time or full-time disability.
According to the New York State Government, the majority of employees in the state are covered for workplace injuries. Any company that is for profit must provide workers’ comp, and this includes for part-time employees, volunteer workers and family members. Non-profit organizations must also provide insurance for the majority of their employees. Other eligible employees include those who:
- Work 40 hours or more for one employer in a domestic situation
- Work in the public school system, except those employed by NYC
- Work in hazardous situations
- Work on a farm and earn a minimum of $1,200 a year
- Are employed by the state
- Are corporate officers
Independent contractors and solo business owners are not covered by workers’ compensation insurance.
