Large truck drivers and work-related accidents

On Behalf of | Mar 10, 2017 | Workplace Accidents |

When it comes to workplace accidents, many people think of the dangers that construction workers and those employed in other industries face. However, large truck drivers are employed in a particularly dangerous profession and it is vital for them to understand the risks they face in Staten Island, and all over the state of New York.

According to data published by the U.S. Department of Labor, 761 people who were driving a tractor-trailer truck passed away in an on-the-job accident during 2014. Furthermore, one-sixth of workplace fatalities in the U.S. claim the lives of those driving tractor-trailer trucks. In addition to the loss of life, these accidents can also result in debilitating injuries. Unfortunately, those who driver tractor-trailers and heavy trucks suffer more non-fatal injuries which require them to take time off work in comparison to all other lines of work.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics also examined some of the dangers that large truck drivers face. Aside from traffic accidents, truck drivers may suffer a workplace injury due to tripping, falling, overexertion or coming into contact with equipment. For large truck drivers, there are a number of strategies to help reduce the chances of a workplace injury or fatality. First of all, truck drivers should never take to the road when they are dangerously fatigued due to working too long or sleep loss. Drivers, especially those who operate delivery trucks, should also exercise caution when lifting a package or other object. Moreover, truck drivers should watch out for surfaces that are slippery and other hazards they may face while on-the-job.
