What are some common treatments for spinal injuries?

On Behalf of | Dec 29, 2016 | Workers' Compensation |

A worker can suffer a spinal injury in virtually any environment. Of course, if you spend your day engaged in physical activities that involve lifting, squatting or using tools, it is almost impossible to avoid placing some measure of strain on your back. But even if you work at a desk all day long, your spine could suffer damage due to the position in which you are sitting. And slips and falls are a threat at every workplace.

It is often possible to treat a minor back injury or strain with rest and over-the-counter anti-inflammatory medications. But if you suffer a serious injury, it is likely that your treatment will be much more extensive. The following are some of the kinds of treatment that you may be issued after a spinal injury:

  • Immobilization wherein you are placed in traction, which can align and stabilize your spine.
  • Intravenous administration of methylprednisolone, which is believed to decrease inflammation near the area of the injury and decrease nerve cell damage.
  • Surgery to remove objects such as herniated discs, fractured vertebrae and bone fragments which may be compressing the spine.

Unfortunately, it is often very difficult to successfully treat a spinal injury, so if you are still in pain after more traditional methods have been tried, you may want to ask your doctor about any experimental treatments that may be available.

Spinal injuries can range in severity from mild discomfort to complete debilitation. And if you suffer a spine injury at work, it is important to seek medical treatment as soon as possible. You also want to acquire all the records related to your treatment as well as a thorough diagnosis in which your doctor describes your medical needs.

You also may want to present this information to an experienced workers’ compensation attorney who can act as your representative in an effort to help you maximize the benefits you receive for treatment and care.
