Every job we take comes with its share of risks and potential hazards. From sitting and staring at a computer screen all day in the same position to carrying heavy loads or operating dangerous equipment, on-the-job injuries are a real possibility for anyone who works. Employers have an obligation to their employees to mitigate these risks as much as possible by giving workers proper safety training and providing a safe work environment. When an accident does happen, employees should be covered by workers’ compensation, which generally pays for medical expenses, lost wages and rehabilitation.
What you may not know, however, is that when a worker dies from injuries incurred on the job, his or her family members may be entitled to benefits to help pay for the inevitable expenses that arise as a result of a tragic accident.
A construction worker who fell at a university in Massachusetts in late July has died. The worker initially survived the fall, which was around 20 feet, and was rushed to a hospital, but was unable to survive the injuries he suffered. An investigation has been launched by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration into the incident.
In a case like this one, the family might be receiving compensation. Sometimes, though, an employer or an insurance company may choose to reject your claim or try to not pay you the benefits you’re due. If that happens, you may want to consider speaking with an attorney. He or she can give you guidance and may be able to conduct an investigation into the injury and determine fault. Depending on the outcome, you may be able to get the benefits you are entitled to.
