Lumber falls on construction supply store worker

On Behalf of | Jan 12, 2015 | Uncategorized |

Many dangers exist in construction work in New York and in any location construction work takes place, given the nature of the tools and the type of jobs construction workers do. They work with sharp and heavy tools and are often put in difficult and dangerous positions. Saws, hammers, scaffolding, nail guns and such are common tools of the trade. Accidents may be as simple and painful as a hammer striking a finger or as devastating as a fall from the top of scaffolding. What we may not realize is that construction work includes more than just construction sites.

This can be exemplified by the Jan. 2 accident in Lubbock, Texas. A 23-year-old employee of Lowe’s Home Improvement store was crushed when a stack of lumber fell on him. It is not known at this time what caused the lumber to fall and OSHA has been called in to do an investigation into what caused the accident.

Construction workers face many dangerous situations at work and, as we have seen, workers connected to the construction industry also face many of the same dangerous situations. Workers’ compensation was set up to provide for employees who face injuries due to their work.

Companies carry workers’ compensation insurance to help cover these accidents. It may be a simple trip to the ER and a few days off work that are needed. Or, as in the situation above, a death may occur and funeral expenses are incurred. A grieving family is also left behind. It is important that you know you rights and receive the full compensation due you. New York has recently made changes to the workers’ compensation benefits you receive. An attorney with current knowledge of these changes may help you in your time of need.
