Get back to work faster with rehabilitation benefits

If you have been unable to work due to a work-related injury in New York, and you want to get back to earning a decent income, there are programs available to help. Unfortunately, some injuries result in a permanent disability that prevents the employee from going back to the position he or she had before. One of the benefits workers' compensation insurance provides is rehabilitation, and this is available for eligible employees.

According to the Department of Labor, employees must meet certain requirements in order to qualify for rehabilitation programs. The requirements include:

  • The employee has a disability that prevents return to regular position
  • The employee is eligible to receive compensation for work-related injuries
  • There are rehabilitation services and programs in the area

The New York State Workers' Compensation Board outlines the four rehabilitation services available for eligible workers in the state. One is medical rehabilitation, which must be recommended by a medical doctor. This program restores the employee's ability to return to work through muscle conditioning and exercise.

For those who are unable to return to their past position, vocational rehab programs help in a variety of ways. These include:

  • Evaluation of skill set, interests and aptitudes
  • Resume development
  • Return-to-work plan
  • Training for new position

Selective placement services help workers with permanent disabilities find a job that fits their current situation. This may include reaching out to participating employers and placing the worker in an available position.

Even with programs in place, some workers have financial or family issues that prevent them from taking advantage of the services. In these cases, social services are available to assist them. Workers still receive compensation payments while participating in the rehabilitation services.
