Depression and Social Security Benefits

On Behalf of | Oct 27, 2011 | Uncategorized |

Americans’ suffering from depression may now be eligible for Social Security Disability (“SSD”) benefits. Typically, Social Security Disability benefits are awarded to individuals who cannot work because of a medical condition that is expected to last one year or result in death. Now, however, Americans who suffer from at least five (5) of the specified symptoms of depression every day for at least two weeks may now be eligible for SSD.

In order to confirm the severity of one’s medical condition, the Social Security Administration reserves the right to perform assessments and request medical documentation. In addition, all applicants will still have to meet the “recent work” and “duration of work” requirements dictated by the Social Security Administration.

Given that over 19 million Americans suffer from some form of depression, this is a welcomed step in the right direction.
