Social Security Impairments

Not everyone who is unable to work qualifies for Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) benefits. In order to qualify and have a chance at a successful claim, you must be able to demonstrate that you are unable to work due to a qualifying impairment, which may include a physical disability or a mental condition. Your impairment, or combination of impairments, must impair your ability to work for at least one year.

Even individuals with obvious impairments have difficulty navigating the Social Security Administration to get the benefits they deserve. Many give up after being initially denied because they do not realize they have a right to keep fighting or do not realize they have the right to an attorney.

Working For The Worker

At Angiuli & Gentile, LLP, we help disabled workers in Staten Island and the surrounding areas of New York get the SSDI benefits they are entitled to. They’re your benefits; you paid into the system your entire working life. We will make sure you are not turned away now in your time of need.

Qualifying Impairments

The roster of impairments or disabilities that can qualify for SSDI benefits is broad, including:

  • Cancer
  • Heart disease
  • Diabetes
  • Respiratory disease
  • Mental disorders such as post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), depression and anxiety
  • Arthritis
  • Loss of vision or hearing
  • Chronic pain or fatigue
  • Bipolar disorder
  • Schizophrenia
  • Migraine headaches
  • Rheumatoid arthritis

Even if you have one of these or another disabling impairment, you still may not qualify for SSDI. In order to qualify, your impairment must prevent you from working at any job, not just the job you had prior to your impairment. Factors such as your age, education level and skills will be taken into consideration during the examination of your ability to transfer into a new industry. We will do everything in our power to make sure you are not railroaded into a situation that is not in your best interest, just so the SSA can avoid approving your claim.
